Hookoom vs MakeMyTrip: An Honest Comparison

A modern hotel building entrance

Comparisons are easy to slant. This one is held to the same standard as everything else we publish: every figure below is already public on this site, nothing here is invented for the comparison.

What we will actually compare

The clearest difference between the two is the imagery. Large OTAs largely run on the hotel's own marketing photography: professionally lit, wide-angle, shot once and reused for years. Hookoom's listings lean on ReviewReels from guests who stayed recently, the room as it actually looks on an ordinary week, not the week it was photographed for the brochure.

The same property looks different depending on who took the photo, and when.

Commission structure is the second difference, and it's the one hotels feel directly. Independent hotels typically pay major OTAs in the region of 18–25% per booking. Hookoom charges under 16% on the same kind of booking, and puts half of what it earns back into paying the verified guest whose review drove that booking. That changes who the hotel is effectively paying for distribution: an algorithm and ad placement, or a guest who already proved the stay was worth booking.

An honest comparison cites numbers it can stand behind.

What stays the same

Neither model removes the need for a hotel to actually be good. A low commission doesn't fix a bad room, and a large OTA's reach doesn't fix a fake-feeling listing. What changes between the two is where the incentive sits: toward winning placement in search results, or toward a guest experience strong enough that the next reviewer wants to vouch for it.

The summary

For a traveller, the practical difference is what you're looking at before you book, a brochure shoot or this month's guest photos. For a hotel owner, it's what you're paying for, a flat cut to a marketplace, or a smaller cut split with the guest actually bringing you the booking.
